Scientific Name: Panthera leo
Subspecies: A total of 7 subspecies have been described, one of which occurs in the Indo-pacific region: Panthera l. persica.
Distribution: Northwestern India: The Gujarat State in the Gir forest.
Habitat: Variable.
Description: Large cat with characteristic features weighing up to 250 kg. It measures up to 80-100 cm over the shoulder. General colour ocre to silvery grey. The mane on the male is variable in colour, from almost black to light ocre. The mane may even be almost non-existing in some males. The tail is long and has a tassel at its point (unique feature amongst the Felidae).

Hunting available in: Totally protected in area of distribution. Probably only around 200 individuals left in the wild.
