Distribution: Common in parts of Northern Europe, the Alps and west-central Asia.
Habitat: Moors, fields, hedgerows and friest.
Description: Large member of the grouse family. The males and females an be easily distinguished by their size and colouration. Males all black apart from red wattles and a white wing bar. Distinctive lyre-shaped tail. 51 - 56cm in length, 1 - 1.5 kg in weight. The hens are smaller, 40 -44 cm in length and 0.75 -1.1 kg in weight. Heavily barred brown and black above, black and buff below.
Hunting method: Walking up with dogs, stalking.
