Scientific Name: Capra falconeri
Subspecies/Distribution: Isolated populations from southern Pakistan north to the northwestern parts of the Himalaja mountains, Tadzikhistan and Uzbekistan. 3 subspecies have been described: 1. Bokharan Markhor (Capra f. heptneri): Tadzikhistan, Uzbekistan along the Amu-Darja River, northern Afghanistan. 2. Flat-horned Markhor (Capra f. falconeri): Northern Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Kashmir. 3. Straight-horned Markhor (Capra f. megaceros): The Quetta mountains and Wasiristan in Pakistan and the border to Afghanistan.
Habitat: Mountainous forest steppes at altitudes between 700 and 4.000 meters.
Description: Large wild goat with characteristic spirally wound horns. It weighs up to 110 kg and measures up to 1 meter over the shoulder. The coat is long and wooly and mane-like. The males have also a beard.
Hunting method: Stalking on foot or on horseback.
