Scientific Name: Felis chaus
Subspecies: A total of 9 subspecies have been described, 4 of which occur in this region: 1. Felis ch. kutas: India: Bengal to Kutch. 2. Felis ch. kelaarti: Southern India and Sri Lanka. 3. Felis ch. prateri: India. 4. Felis ch. fulvidina: Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Kampuchea.
Habitat: Near rivers and lakes, in swamps, wet tropical forests, plains with tall grasses and reeds.
Description: Medium sized cat weighing up to 14 kg and measuring up to 40 cm over the shoulder. It reaches a total body length of 95 cm without tail (25 cm).
Hunting method: With dogs and traps.
