Scientific Name: Muntiacus muntjak
Subspecies: 1. Muntiacus m. muntjak: Northwest Pakistan, Nepal, Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Malaysia. 2. Muntiacus m. vaginalis: India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Yunnan (China), Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Kampuchea.
Habitat: Dense forest with good cover in undulated and flat terrain.
Description: Medium sized deer weighing up to 30 kg and measuring up to 60 cm over the shoulder. It reaches a total body length of up to 1 meter without tail (18 cm). General colour greyish brown to rufous brown with dark markings on the face and the legs. The Muntjac is also called the "Barking Deer" as it produces a barking-like call when alarmed.
Hunting method: Lying in wait, with beaters and dogs.
