Scientific Name: Capra ibex
Subspecies: None in Europe.
Distribution: Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the former Yugoslavia.
Habitat: Mountains.
Description: Middle sized animal of the goat family. It has a compact body and long, strong legs. The Ibex weighs around 100 kg, and measures up to 110 cm over the shoulder. General colour brown with black and white markings on the legs and underparts. The horns are long and heavy, forming a semi- circle, curving upwards, backwards and then downwards, ribbed with prominent transverse ridges throughout their length except at their tip. Both sexes have horns but the male Ibex carries the biggest.
