The district is the biggest state forest area in Hungary with a total of 104,000 hectares devided into 8 districts. They are located in the southwestern corner of Hungary in the Somogy County, which is described as one of Hungary's most game rich regions. There are 8 separate hunting districts in the area - varying in size from 9.300 to 48.200 ha, where all of the major European game species are native – including red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar and roe deer.
The largest hunting area is called Lábod and covers an impressive 48,200 hectares and along with Szantód it is home to one of Hungary's largest free-living populations of fallow deer. Here you can experience an intense fallow deer hunt in October, where the forest is full of grunting fallow deer all day long. At the same time, the quality of the game population is top notch and the extremely professional and strict management ensures excellent genetics and trophy quality.
The big Hungarian trophies are naturally popular among many hunters, and the top state forest areas know they have the quality matching the prices. On the other hand, Hungary operates with a unique system which ensures that the hunter only has to pay for his trophy if it falls within +/- 15% tolerance of the pre-agreed trophy size.
It is simply the hunting guides responsibility to correctly assess the trophy within this margin. If the hunting guide makes a mistake anyway, it is the hunter's right to leave the trophy on the territory without charge, or choose and pay what it costs if the trophy e.g. is larger than calculated - a good security against budget overruns.
There are 11 first-class hunting lodges covering the 104.000 ha, and each will make the time spent here unforgettable. The lodges are located in beautiful surroundings and provides a very high level of service with own chefs and professional staff.
